Downtown-Galveston-Christmas-Tree

Holidays surrounding Christmas time are extremely busy as everyone has days off from school and work. It’s that time of the year when families come together to enjoy the season and most importantly some quality family time. Various events are happening on Galveston Island during the holiday season.

Galveston Island is home to many many fun events that occur as soon as winter starts. There are various places where these festivities take place so let’s look at what you can do when you’re on Galveston Island.

Moody Gardens

Over eight holiday attractions take place at Moody Gardens. The two most popular ones are the Festival of Lights and Iceland: Christmas around the world.

The Festival of Lights is a traditional event that brings together friends and families. Moody Gardens is set up with more than a million lights creating a beautiful illusion onto Galveston Bay. Bring your friends and family and take a leisurely stroll through the twinkling lights.

Iceland: Christmas around the world is without a doubt the highlight of the holiday season. Millions of pounds of ice were carved by professionals who create an unforgettable scene of Christmas all over the world.

You will have a taste of other cultures as you travel around the world. From Russia to Egypt and China, it will be a mind-blowing trip that you will relish. On the Giant Ice Slide, you will find yourself atop the stately Eiffel Tower only to glide your way off to see the likes of distant places like Australia, Holland, and Rio, not to mention Santa Claus. At temperatures of just 9 degrees, it’s chilly over here, so you better arm yourself with gloves and hats. Fortunately, you will also be provided with a parka to beat the cold.

Strand Historic District

Galveston’s historic downtown district will host Downtown Lasers & Lights featuring new laser shows, a magical display of lights and other holiday-themed attractions in Saengerfest Park. Highlights at Saengerfest Park include a 30 foot tall Christmas tree and a giant snow globe for visitors to enjoy on weekends. You don’t want to leave your camera behind so you can take great shots that you will cherish for years to come. In addition, lights will be hung on The Strand from 20th to 25th streets and also along 23rd and Postoffice streets.

New this year is a four-hour holiday laser light show synchronized to music. The light show will be projected on the American National Insurance Company Building from 6 to 10 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 22.

Take a leisurely stroll throughout the Strand area and tackle some of your holiday shopping at the district’s many gift shops, boutiques, art galleries and antique shops set among beautiful Victorian architecture.

Grand Opera House

The experience of Grand Opera House is one of a kind. Symphonies from the Vienna Boys Choir, Jerry Jeff Walker and Bandstand are played so people can relate to the season. Classics such as A Christmas Carol, The Nutcracker, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer are a must watch!

A Christmas Festival On Galveston Island,TX

Dickens On The Strand

The 46th annual Dickens on the Strand Christmas Festival returns to Galveston Island, TX on Friday, December 6, 2019 and continues until Sunday, December 8, 2019. It is a three-day street festival which takes place in the Historic Strand District. With most of the Strand area’s architecturally rich buildings now restored, Galveston’s historic downtown provides the perfect backdrop for this internationally acclaimed family holiday event.

The festival is a holiday tradition featuring parades, non-stop entertainment, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers and a host of other entertainers.

Our favorite parades are the Queen’s Parade and the Victorian Bed Race parade. The Queen’s Parade is held both Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The Victorian Bed Race parade is on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. It’s always a crowd favorite and pits 5-person teams against each other for a footrace down Galveston’s historic streets. We also suggest the Pickwick’s Lanternlight Parade.

History

Dickens on the Strand was established in 1974. Tourists visit Galveston Island to celebrate this festival and to re-live the era of Charles Dickens. It revolves around the Victorian London of the 19th Century. You honestly feel like your back in time. Besides offering some wonderful entertainment, this festival is also known for the best shopping experiences as well. Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gift items.

The festival is sponsored by the Galveston Historical Foundation. Every year, this festival attracts between 5,000 to 20,000 visitors. Approximately 100 to 500 exhibitors participate in the festival.

Details Of The Festival

This year’s festival kicks off Friday, December 6th at 5 p.m. and concludes Sunday, December 8th at 6 p.m. There is a lot of entertainment which people come across during this festival. There are six stages, a lot of jugglers, carolers, musicians who play the best tunes and music, bagpipers and ongoing parades.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $9 for children ages 7-12 for Saturday or Sunday. We want to share some good news with you. Your ticket price also includes admission to London Wharf (Pier 21) and the 1877 ELISSA, the Official Tall Ship of Texas. The ELISSA is an authentic Dickens-era artifact.

Friday night admission is free and Attendees in Victorian costume are admitted for ½ price.

Conclusion
